Who would have thought one of the most anticipated albums of
the summer would come from soul legend Bobby Womack?
Not me, for one.
Womack is set to release “The Bravest Man in the Universe” –
his first album in over a decade – on June 12. If the title track and “Please
Forgive My Heart” are indicative what we can expect from the entire album, then
listeners are in for a treat.
Both songs pick up from where we last heard Womack: namely,
singing on the Gorillaz’s third album, “Plastic
Beach ,” as well as the songs “Cloud of
Unknowing” and “Bobby in Phoenix ”
from the group’s latest effort, “The Fall.”
Womack’s new album isn’t stylistically different from his
recent collaborations with Gorillaz, and in fact, Albarn is producing Womack’s
new album.
What’s most striking is the quality and inflection of
Womack’s voice after years of drug abuse and near-death experiences. To say
he’s lived a rough life is an understatement, and not many of his peers have
survived the tribulations of a half-century struggling to find a place in
popular music.
Here’s a little taste of what’s to come:
